The first thing that comes to mind for me when I think of law is justice. Justice and fairness are the reasons why I love being part of the legal field. Particularly in employment law, I enjoy watching clients get to know the laws and regulations which to abide by to make sure they do right by their employees. And at the same time, seeing employees get educated and become familiar with the laws also gives me an amazing feeling. As a daughter of an immigrant family, I have seen family members being treated unfairly and unlawfully. Being educated on employment law and your rights as an employee or employer means you will pass down essential knowledge from generation to generation. It means helping keep your family and loved ones from being taken advantage of in their place of employment.
Aside from being a part of the legal field, I like to spend time helping organize community events for small local vendors and artists. I like to help create opportunities for those around me. I am fascinated by San Diego’s local artists, especially those involved in storytelling in Chicano Park and the Barrio Logan area. I have learned a lot about the hardships faced by our Hispanic and Latin communities, and the importance of supporting local businesses and artists to keep the spirit of our community and culture alive.
In this line of work, I’ve had the chance to see firsthand how San Diego’s Hispanic community was greatly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, many losing their jobs, opportunities, and loved ones. In a past case, our law firm was allowed to represent a Hispanic family dealing with the loss of a loved one, whose body was neglected by their local mortuary during the pandemic. It was a tragic and sensitive case that stuck very close to me. I found that the family not only needed legal support but also emotional. I had the chance to get to know their family, and learn about the struggles they’ve had to face in terms of employment during the pandemic, and how much their family has been impacted. I became close to the family and learned that our firm does not only lend a hand but also help change lives. I enjoy being in the business of helping people and making a change.
