When you decide to register a business in California, there are three options that are most popular for business entity structures in California: corporation, LLC, and DBA.

Choosing a name for your business sounds simple, but many business and legal problems can come from choosing the wrong name period of course, you may always alter the name at a later time, but the less you have to do that the better. Step three will illustrate how you can search for a business name in California. However, it is recommended that you take the following steps prior to looking through state databases.
Business name restrictions in California
When you register a business in California, your business name needs to follow certain restrictions:

Forming a California LLC
Incorporating in California
It should be noted that when you register a business with the California Secretary of State, it can take several weeks to have the paperwork approved. The process can be expedited by delivering the documents by hand to the office and paying an additional fee. In general, California is one of the slower states.
Filing a California DBA
When you register a business in California and want to file for a DBA, you do so with the county. You will have to contact your local county recorder to learn what specific forms must be submitted as well as what the process is. You can locate the county recorder’s office by looking up ‘my county recorder.’
Your business also needs apply for an EIN to open a bank account and hire employees. An EIN is like your company’s Social Security number. When you register a business in the form of an LLC or corporation, an EIN is required. It is optional for DBAs unless the company has employees. If you register a business as a DBA and do not get an EIN, you will need to use your personal Social Security Number on a lot of documents. Therefore, to prevent identity theft, it is recommended you get an EIN.
To get an EIN, you can fill out Form SS-4 for the IRS or apply online.
When you register a business in California, you will need to keep personal and business finances apart by opening business credit and bank accounts. LLCs and corporations must have these separate accounts, but this is a positive, as they enable your company to get lines of credit and favorable loans. You can call your bank of preference and ask about opening a bank account for your business. In general, you will need these documents handy:
When you register a business in California, you should create an accounting and record-keeping system and learn about the taxes that your business will need to pay. In general, a company needs to preserve its documents for three years, which includes a list of all addresses and owners, copies of financial statements, formation documents, amendments, annual reports, and any changes to the company. All corporate and tax filings must be kept for a minimum of three years.
Once you register a business name in California, you will need to get a business license for the company. This license allows your business to operate in the county or city. Usually, this will also involve registering for state permits and taxes. It is possible the city will require these as part of the process of licensing.
