Are Voting Records Public

1. What Information Do Voting Records Contain?
2. Who Can Access Voting Records?
3. Can I Request My Voting Record Be Kept Private?

What Information Do Voting Records Contain?

The voting records will always have at least your party affiliation, name, and address. In some states, your voting records may also contain some of the following information:

  • Date of birth
  • Gender
  • Parent’s details
  • Place of birth
  • Military ID
  • Social Security Number
  • Signature
  • Driver’s license
  • Passport number
  • Past addresses
  • Voting district
  • Phone number
  • Email address
  • Last time you voted
  • Accessibility or assistance required
  • Status (active or inactive)
  • Prior felony convictions
  • When you last did jury duty

Who Can Access Voting Records?

Each state sets their own regulations for who can and cannot access voting records. In some states, they are shared publicly, and anyone can download them; in others, there are strict restrictions. Check your state records to find out who can access voting records.

Can I Request My Voting Record Be Kept Private?

Some states will allow you to request parts of your voting record be kept private. In some states, there are certain “protected classes” who can have their voting records kept private. These may include:

  • Domestic violence victims
  • People with restraining orders or protective orders
  • Law enforcement officers and their spouses
  • Foster parents
  • People in witness protection
  • Victims awaiting criminal trials
  • Retired attorneys and judges
  • Patients, employees, volunteers, and medical professionals at reproductive healthcare services
  • Uniformed service members
  • Underage voters who have pre-registered

Check your state laws to check if your voting records can be kept private.
